The scene opens up as Martha and George return from a party at two in the morning. Martha is quite drunk and her husband, George, is teasing her for being too loud and looking too old. Later, its noted that Martha has invited company to come over at such a late hour of the night. George and Martha argue for a while about them coming over and how it is super late to have vistors over. The company arrives, a new man in the math department and his wife while Martha is mocking George and his "moping" around the house. Neither of them want to answer the door, but George ends up breaking down and listens to Martha.

Nick and His wife arrive, as He tells her that it was a mistake to come and visit so late. George insists that its alright and it doesn't matter what time it is. George begins to pour drinks to his guest, the first of many, as he begins to imply that his wife is an alcholic. She denies that accusastion and slowly gets everyone to sing "Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf." Martha decides to show Honey, the house and as the leave George warns her to not bring up the child.

When the women leave the room, George begins to ask continues questions to Nick, while amusing himself by giving him a hard time. They discuss George's field and he lets slip that Martha wants him to become the head of teh department becuase he was so during the war. George asks nick if he has any children, which he replies no but when nick asks the same question, George avoids it and calls for Martha. Honey returns telling him that Martha is changiung her dress and that she was told that they have a son.

Soon Nick and Honey espress their thougths of leaving btu George does not want them to leave telling them that the fun has only began.

ACT II

BACK
